Information for Companies

Information for reporting companies

In order to enhance a company’s position in the Carbon Ranking, ET Index recommends the following:

  • Companies publish emissions data for Scopes 1, 2 and 3 in a clear and accessible manner, either on the company website, in the sustainability report, integrated report, annual report or across all of the sources mentioned.
  • Companies should ensure this information has been externally verified to a reasonable standard of assurance, ideally against a specific GHG standard such as ISO 14064-3, but at least against a general assurance standard such as ISAE 3000.
  • Companies should calculate and publish comprehensive Scope 3 emissions data according to the new GHG protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard. This includes explaining and justifying any Scope 3 categories which have not been included. The latest information on verification of Scope 3 can be found at the GHG Protocol and ISO websites.
  • Make sure that any verification statement is publicly available and is included in the company sustainability report, integrated report or annual report or can be found easily on the company's website.

Methodology Submissions and Disputes

ET Index distinguishes between issues of methodology and issues of data accuracy. In the case of a methodology submission, such as comments on the inference method employed, these will be presented to the independent ET Carbon Ranking Quality Assurance Panel under the Chairmanship of Professor Michael Mainelli for review and determination. Please submit submissions to [email protected].

Data Appeals

In the case where a company feels its publicly reported information has been inaccurately represented in the Carbon Rankings (e.g. a decimal place in the wrong place) it should in the first instance summarise the reasons for its appeal, initially in no more than 300 words. Please notify us of your intention to appeal by emailing [email protected].

An appeal for a public correction of the ET Index's published figures must be received within 15 days of first publication. In such cases the dispute will be investigated by ET Index staff and if the correction is deemed material and justified ET Index will republish the ET Carbon Ranking to incorporate all such successful Data Appeals.

Cut Off Dates

Please note that for the 2015 ET Carbon Rankings the final checking process began on the 30th June 2014. Setting a cut-off date is a practical matter related to the logistics of compiling and checking the publicly available information that has been gathered.

Whilst ET Index may include information published after this date, if it is brought to our attention within a feasible time scale, in principle we are not under any obligation to do so due to the practicalities of the ranking process.

Transparency of Appeals Process

Once a company makes a formal appeal against its position in the Ranking, all correspondence and communication between ET Index and the company becomes a matter of public record which ET Index may publish alongside the result of the Appeal.
